Surface assessment
Inspected the travertine pool surrounds to confirm stone type, sealer condition, and the extent of mould penetration. Travertine is a porous natural stone — high-pressure cleaning will damage the surface, etch the finish, and strip any sealer. Confirmed soft wash plus low-pressure rinse was the correct approach.
Pool & surrounds protection
Set up the work area to manage runoff away from the pool wherever possible, and prepared for post-clean pool water chemistry adjustment. On a clean of this scale immediately adjacent to a pool, some minor splash transfer is unavoidable — managing it correctly is part of the job.
Soft wash biocide application
Applied a soft wash biocide solution at low pressure across the entire travertine surround, working into the mould-stained sections. The treatment kills mould and algae at the spore level rather than relying on pressure to lift surface staining — essential on natural stone where you can't compensate for chemistry with pressure.
Dwell time
Allowed the biocide to dwell and break down the embedded organic growth across all stained sections. Travertine's porosity means embedded mould needs time to release rather than responding to immediate pressure.
Low-pressure rinse
Rinsed the entire surround at low pressure — high enough to flush dead organic matter and biocide residue, low enough to leave the travertine surface, sealer, and grout intact. Worked methodically to avoid streaking on the natural stone.
Pool water chemistry adjustment
Added chlorine to the pool to neutralise any minor contaminant transfer from the cleaning process — standard practice for any cleaning work directly adjacent to a pool. The pool was checked for clarity and chemistry before leaving site.
Final inspection
Walked the full area to confirm even finish, no streaking on the travertine, and clean grout lines. Cleared all equipment and protective coverings.

The before image shows the extent of contamination on the stone leading to the pool edge: heavy black staining, embedded dirt, and the kind of biological growth that won’t respond to a standard pressure clean.
Travertine is the reason the method matters here. Natural stone — travertine, sandstone, limestone, marble — cannot be cleaned with high-pressure water without damaging the surface. High pressure etches the stone, strips any protective sealer, blows out grout lines, and leaves a permanently degraded finish that no follow-up work can restore. The correct approach is soft wash: a specialised biocide solution applied at low pressure that kills mould and algae at the spore level, allowed to dwell and break down embedded contamination, then rinsed with controlled low-pressure water that flushes the dead organic matter without harming the stone.
Pool proximity added a second consideration. Cleaning directly alongside a pool means some minor splash transfer of biocide and dislodged contamination into the water is unavoidable, regardless of how careful the work setup is.
