Breeze Block Feature Wall & Bench — Soft Wash Restoration

Gold Coast

Mid-century-style decorative breeze block feature wall with built-in concrete bench seat, transformed from weathered dark grey to clean bright white using a soft wash biocide treatment. The detailed circular pattern was fully restored without pressure that could damage the decorative blocks.

What We Did

Surface assessment

Assessed the wall and bench for the type of biological growth and the depth of staining. Decorative breeze block has deep recesses and porous concrete texture — the organic growth had colonised both the face and the inner edges of every block opening.

Area protection

Protected surrounding pavers, garden beds, the cactus, and adjacent timber from chemical drift. The biocide solution is effective on concrete and organic growth but must be kept off plants and nearby finishes.

Biocide application

Applied soft wash biocide solution at low pressure to saturate the entire wall and bench surface, including the deep recesses of the decorative block pattern. The treatment kills mould and algae at the root rather than only removing surface staining.

Dwell & treatment

Allowed the solution to dwell and break down the organic growth. This step is what makes soft washing more durable than pressure cleaning alone — the biology is killed, not just displaced.

Low-pressure rinse & inspection

Rinsed the entire wall and bench with clean water at a safe pressure for decorative concrete, working into the block recesses to flush all residue. Inspected the result to confirm even coverage across every block and the bench surface.

The Result

The wall and bench were restored from a weathered, dark grey surface to clean bright white — the decorative circular block pattern is crisp and readable again, and the feature now looks like a deliberate design element rather than a neglected backyard fixture.

Soft wash treatments on masonry and concrete typically resist algae and mould regrowth for 12–24 months, significantly longer than pressure washing alone. In shaded or moisture-prone positions, annual maintenance keeps the surface looking like this year-round.

Suitable For

Breeze block & besser block walls
Concrete feature walls & screens
Built-in benches & seating
Garden walls & retaining walls
Rendered & painted exterior surfaces
Decorative masonry

Soft washing is the right approach for decorative concrete and masonry features — high-pressure water can damage block edges, erode render, and displace joint material without actually killing the organic growth underneath. A biocide treatment restores the surface and prevents regrowth, safely.

This decorative breeze block feature wall and matching built-in bench seat had darkened significantly over time — the porous concrete had absorbed algae and mould growth across the entire surface, and the intricate circular pattern, while structurally sound, had lost its visual impact under the dark biological staining.

The restoration was handled via soft wash — the only safe approach for decorative porous concrete like this. High-pressure water on breeze block risks chipping the block edges, forcing moisture deep into the porous concrete, and displacing any mortar or jointing material — and more importantly, it only removes the surface staining without killing the underlying biological growth. That growth will return within months if it isn’t treated at the root.

Soft washing applies a biocide solution at low pressure, allowing it to penetrate the porous concrete surface and kill the algae and mould at the spore level. The deep recesses of the circular block pattern required careful application to achieve full coverage, but the low-pressure approach meant no risk of damage to the decorative block detail. After dwell time and a thorough low-pressure rinse, the wall and bench were fully restored — clean, bright white, and structurally unchanged. The biocide treatment slows regrowth significantly, typically 12–24 months before any noticeable buildup returns.
