What Is Retaining Walls?
A retaining wall serves a critical structural function: holding soil in place against gravity on sloping ground, managing level changes that would otherwise erode, and creating the defined terraces and garden beds that make a sloping site genuinely usable. Beyond function, a well-designed retaining wall adds significant structure and character to a garden — and on steep SE QLD blocks, it's often the element that transforms an unusable backyard into a beautiful, functional outdoor space.
In Queensland, council approval is generally required for retaining walls over 1 metre in height, walls that affect stormwater drainage, and walls constructed on or near a property boundary. Engineering certification by a registered structural engineer is required for taller walls, particularly those over 1 metre and in any situation where the wall's failure would pose a risk to structures or people. We identify these requirements at the onsite inspection and coordinate the approvals process as part of the project.
The structural elements that separate a retaining wall that lasts a generation from one that fails within a few years are straightforward but frequently skipped in cheaper installations. Footings must be excavated to the correct depth and width for the wall height and soil type — undersized footings shift as soils move through wet and dry cycles. Steel posts for sleeper walls must be set to a depth proportional to wall height — the rule of thumb is one-third of total post length below ground. Drainage behind the wall is not optional: an ag-pipe in a gravel blanket, with weep holes at regular intervals, must be installed behind every retaining wall regardless of height. Backfill must be compacted in controlled layers, not dumped and left.
The most common cause of retaining wall failure in SE QLD is hydrostatic pressure from water building up behind the wall. QLD's heavy wet season rainfall, combined with the clay-heavy soils found across much of Brisbane, Ipswich and the Sunshine Coast hinterland, creates extreme pressure behind walls built without drainage. Clay soils absorb water slowly and expand when saturated — a wall that looks perfect in the dry season can be leaning within weeks of the first big wet if drainage wasn't designed in from the start.
One Call Property Care builds retaining walls that last — because we never skip the drainage, we never undersize the footings, and we always select materials suited to the site conditions and home style.

A Retaining Wall Done Right Lasts a Generation
The most expensive retaining wall job is the second one — when the first wall fails and has to be completely rebuilt.
- Properly engineered drainage eliminates hydrostatic pressure — the #1 cause of retaining wall failure in QLD
- Deep footings and correct post setting means the wall doesn't move as soils shift through wet/dry cycles
- Council-compliant construction protects you from disputes, liability and resale complications
- Engineering certification gives you documented proof of compliance for insurance and future sale
- A properly built wall doesn't need ongoing maintenance beyond visual inspection
- Quality materials — galvanised posts, certified sleepers, quality stone — don't corrode or deteriorate in QLD's climate
Build it once. Build it right. One Call retaining walls are designed to still be standing when you sell the house.
