Earthworks That Set Your Project Up to Last

Earthworks That Set Your Project Up to Last

Professional site levelling, cut and fill, land reshaping, and soil management across South East Queensland — the foundation every landscaping project is built on.

What Is Earthworks?

Earthworks is the discipline of reshaping land in bulk — moving, removing, or importing soil to achieve the levels, grades, and surface conditions that a project requires before anything visible is built or planted. It is distinct from excavation, which involves targeted digging for specific structures like footings, pipes, or pools. Earthworks is about the land itself: its shape, its level, its drainage, and its suitability as a foundation for what comes next.

The most common earthworks tasks on residential sites in SEQ are cut and fill (removing soil from high points and using it to build up low points to achieve a flat or gently graded surface), soil import (bringing in engineered fill or quality topsoil to raise levels or improve growing conditions), spoil removal (loading and disposing of excess material to licensed facilities), surface grading to achieve correct drainage falls, and compaction works to prepare a sub-base for paving, concrete, or other structures.

Earthworks done correctly is invisible. What you see is a level backyard, a flat base for a pool or outdoor room, a lawn that drains properly after rain, a driveway that sits solid and stable. What you do not see is the compaction in layers, the drainage fall designed into the grade, the quality of fill used, the sediment controls that prevented runoff into the stormwater system during the work. When these things are done poorly, you see the consequences instead: paving that cracks and settles, concrete slabs that heave, lawns with persistent wet patches, water pooling against house footings.

SEQ soils present specific challenges. The sandy coastal soils common across the Redlands, Bayside, and parts of the Gold Coast are easy to work but offer little structural support without proper compaction. Clay-heavy soils across Brisbane's middle and outer suburbs, Logan, and Ipswich compress poorly when wet — working them in saturated conditions causes structural damage to the soil profile that can take months to recover. The hilly terrain in inner Brisbane and the Gold Coast hinterland creates steep block challenges where significant cut and fill volumes are needed to create usable level areas, and where erosion control during the works is essential.

Many SEQ blocks — particularly those in residential subdivisions developed from the 1990s onward — also have a builders' fill problem. During subdivision, the blocks were levelled with compacted clay subsoil with no consideration for future landscaping. Plants struggle in this material regardless of watering, and any garden established in builders' fill without proper soil replacement will underperform indefinitely. Identifying and addressing this at the earthworks stage is far more cost-effective than repeatedly replacing failed plantings.

One Call Property Care holds $20M public liability insurance, is QBCC licensed, and provides a 30-day workmanship guarantee. For works requiring engineering compaction certificates — typically fill under concrete slabs or retaining wall footings — we coordinate engineer attendance and certification as part of the project.

Types of Earthworks We Undertake

Earthworks covers a range of distinct tasks, each suited to different site conditions and project goals. Here is a breakdown of the main earthworks types we undertake for residential properties across SEQ.

Cut and Fill

From $2,000 depending on volume and site

Cut and fill is the process of moving material on-site — cutting soil from areas that are too high and compacting it into areas that are too low to achieve a level or gently graded surface. It is the most cost-effective levelling method when sufficient material exists on the block. The cut and fill balance is calculated during the assessment phase to minimise excess material and disposal cost.

Best for

  • Sloping residential and acreage blocks
  • Creating level areas for lawns, decks, pools, or outdoor rooms
  • Blocks where the existing soil volume is sufficient to achieve target levels

Key benefits

  • Most cost-effective levelling approach when sufficient on-site material exists
  • Minimises soil disposal costs
  • Can be designed to create multiple level terraces on steep blocks

Soil Import

Quoted by load and volume — contact for estimate

When a block does not have enough on-site material to achieve required levels, or when the existing soil is unsuitable (builders' fill, contaminated material, poor clay), fill is imported and delivered. Fill types include engineered compactable fill for structural applications and quality screened topsoil for garden and lawn areas.

Best for

  • Low-lying blocks that need raising
  • Post-construction sites with builders' fill requiring replacement
  • Garden beds needing quality growing medium where existing soil is unsuitable

Key benefits

  • Raises ground level to achieve required drainage and usability
  • Quality topsoil gives new plantings the best possible start
  • Engineered fill certified to required compaction standards

Spoil Removal

$600–$1,200 per load depending on material and distance

When earthworks generates more material than the site can accommodate, excess soil is loaded and removed to a licensed disposal facility. Spoil removal is costed by volume and material type and is always itemised in written quotes. We hold appropriate licences for the disposal of standard excavated material.

Best for

  • Any earthworks project generating excess material
  • Pool excavations and footing excavations where no fill is needed on site
  • Site cleanouts of old fill or contaminated soil

Key benefits

  • Licensed disposal — environmentally compliant
  • Clears the site for the next stage of works
  • Itemised cost in quote — no surprises

Compaction Works

Included in earthworks scope — not separately priced

Compaction is the process of mechanically consolidating fill in controlled layers to achieve the density required for structural performance. It is the most commonly skipped step on residential earthworks and the most common cause of paving settlement, concrete cracking, and uneven lawns. We compact in layers and coordinate engineer attendance for compaction testing where certification is required.

Best for

  • Any fill placed under concrete slabs or paving
  • Retaining wall backfill
  • Sub-base preparation for driveways and hardscaping

Key benefits

  • Prevents settling and cracking in structures built on fill
  • Engineering certification available where required
  • Correct compaction extends the life of all surface works

Swale and Dam Construction on Acreage

Quoted on area, volume, and design requirements

On larger residential blocks and rural properties, earthwork reshaping can manage drainage and water retention without underground pipe systems. Swales are shaped channels that guide surface water across a landscape to a safe discharge point. Small dams and water retention features can be constructed on acreage for water harvesting or fire management purposes.

Best for

  • Large residential blocks and lifestyle properties
  • Rural and acreage properties with surface water management needs
  • Properties wanting to capture and manage rainfall on site

Key benefits

  • Low-cost drainage management at scale compared to piped systems
  • Can be vegetated and integrated into the landscape
  • Water harvesting features add value and amenity on acreage

Erosion Control and Topsoil Management

Included in earthworks scope

Erosion control is mandatory on any Queensland earthworks project and is not an optional extra. We install silt fencing and sediment filters on day one and maintain them throughout the works. Topsoil is stripped and stockpiled at the start of earthworks where possible and respread as the finished surface layer — preserving the biologically active growing medium that takes years to develop.

Best for

  • All earthworks projects
  • Sloping sites with runoff risk
  • Projects adjacent to waterways or stormwater inlets

Key benefits

  • Legally required — avoids environmental offence under QLD legislation
  • Preserves topsoil quality by separating it from subsoil during works
  • Protects adjacent gardens and structures from sedimentation

Most residential earthworks projects combine several of these work types. For example, a sloping backyard preparation for a new pool might involve cut and fill to create a level pad, spoil removal for excess material, sub-base compaction before paving, and a swale to manage surface drainage around the new structure. We assess each site individually and design the scope accordingly.

Getting Earthworks Right Pays Off in Everything Built on Top

Earthworks is the foundation of every landscaping project. When it is done correctly, everything built or planted on top performs as intended for decades. When it is done poorly, the consequences compound over time.

  • Correct drainage falls established during earthworks prevent water pooling against house footings — one of the most expensive problems to fix retrospectively
  • Properly compacted sub-base prevents settling under paving and concrete — cracking and movement are almost always caused by inadequate compaction, not material failure
  • Quality topsoil imported as part of earthworks gives gardens a growing medium that produces healthy plants — builders' fill does not, regardless of how much you water
  • Flat, usable outdoor areas created from previously unusable sloping blocks significantly increase the liveable and saleable area of a property
  • Correct grading during earthworks reduces or eliminates the need for expensive underground drainage systems by simply directing water to where it should go
  • Engineering compaction certification obtained during the works protects you at building inspection and at future property sale
  • Erosion control managed correctly during works prevents ongoing slope instability and protects established gardens adjacent to the works area

The cost of getting earthworks right the first time is always less than the cost of lifting finished paving or pulling up an established lawn to correct what was done wrong underneath.

Our Earthworks Process

  1. Site Inspection and Cut and Fill Assessment

We assess the site, calculate cut and fill volumes, identify access requirements and equipment needs, confirm soil type, and advise on any council requirements for fill compaction or sediment management.

  2. Underground Services and Sediment Controls

We run a Dial Before You Dig check to locate underground services before any excavation begins. Sediment controls — silt fencing, sediment filters — are installed on day one and maintained throughout the works.

  3. Excavation and Soil Movement

Soil is cut from high points and moved or loaded as required. Excess material is removed to a licensed disposal facility. Fill is imported and delivered as specified.

  4. Compaction and Grading

Fill is compacted in controlled layers per engineering requirements or specification. Surface is graded to achieve the required drainage falls and finished levels. Where engineering certification is required, the engineer attends for testing at this stage.

  5. Site Cleanup and Final Level Check

Sediment controls are removed once the site is stabilised. Final levels are checked against the plan. The site is left in a clean, ready-for-next-stage condition before any subsequent landscaping proceeds.

What's Included

  • Site assessment and cut and fill volume calculation
  • Dial Before You Dig underground service location
  • Sediment and erosion controls installed and maintained throughout
  • Appropriate equipment selected for site — mini excavator, bobcat, dingo, or tipper
  • Soil cutting, moving, and loading
  • Removal of excess spoil to licensed disposal facility
  • Import and delivery of fill or topsoil where required
  • Compaction in controlled layers per specification
  • Surface grading to required drainage falls and finished levels
  • Engineering compaction testing coordination where required
  • Site cleanup and final levels check
