For standard residential earthworks — levelling a backyard, preparing a garden bed, reshaping a lawn area — council approval is generally not required. For significant cut and fill involving more than 1 metre of level change, works on steeply sloping blocks, or earthworks near waterways or drainage corridors, an approval may be required. We advise on this at the inspection stage.

Small site levelling jobs take one day. A typical residential backyard reshape takes one to three days depending on volume and access. Large-scale cut and fill on a sloping block can take three to seven days. We provide a realistic timeframe at the quoting stage.

We select equipment based on the job and site access. Mini excavators suit tight-access sites and precise work. Skid steers and bobcats move bulk material efficiently on open sites. Compact dingos access through narrow gates (as small as 700mm) on very restricted properties. Tipper trucks are used for soil disposal. If the job requires rock breaking, we include appropriate equipment in the quote.

Cut and fill uses the soil already on your block — soil is cut from a high area and compacted into a low area to create a level surface. This is the most cost-effective approach when sufficient material exists on site. Importing fill means bringing in additional soil or engineered fill from outside — necessary when the block does not have enough material on site to achieve the required levels, or when the existing soil quality is too poor to use.

Excess soil is loaded and removed to a licensed disposal facility. Disposal costs depend on volume and material type and are always itemised in our written quote before work begins.

We install sediment controls — silt fencing, sediment sock filters at drain entry points — on day one and maintain them throughout the works. Redirecting disturbed soil into the stormwater system is an environmental offence in Queensland, and we take this obligation seriously. Controls are removed only once the site is stabilised.

For fill placed under concrete slabs or retaining wall footings, compaction certification from a geotechnical engineer is commonly required regardless of depth — check with your certifier or council. For landscape earthworks not under structures, there is no fixed depth threshold, but any significant fill depth warrants professional assessment of compaction requirements. We advise on this at inspection and coordinate engineer attendance where needed.

We assess access, calculate cut and fill volumes, and design safe working methods before beginning. Significant level changes on steep blocks may involve retaining walls as part of the overall design.

We work across all common SEQ soil types — sandy coastal soils in the Redlands and Bayside areas, clay-heavy profiles across Brisbane, Logan, and Ipswich, and rocky substrates common on steeper blocks. Clay soils that are saturated cannot be worked without causing structural damage to the profile, so we reschedule wet-weather work rather than compromise the result.

Earthworks is one of the most fundamental tools in drainage correction. Correct surface grading — establishing a minimum 1:100 fall away from all structures — resolves many drainage problems that would otherwise require underground pipe systems. We assess drainage as part of every earthworks job and design grading to direct water to appropriate discharge points.

In Queensland's climate, we most commonly install Sir Walter Buffalo (excellent shade tolerance, soft underfoot), Zoysia (fine leaf, great for high-traffic areas), Kikuyu (fast growing, drought tolerant, suits sunny yards), and Couch (excellent for sports and active families). The best choice depends on your sun exposure, soil type, drainage, and intended use. We'll recommend the right variety during your consultation.

New turf needs to be watered 2–3 times daily for the first 2 weeks to establish roots. After that, reduce to daily watering for week 3, then every 2–3 days from week 4. Yes — we build timber sleeper and concrete block retaining walls for residential and commercial properties. Properly engineered and installed timber sleeper walls last 20–30 years. Concrete block walls have an even longer lifespan. All our retaining walls over 1m high are engineered and comply with Queensland council requirements. We handle smaller tree and shrub removal as part of landscaping projects. For larger tree removal or trees near structures and power lines, we coordinate with licensed arborists.
